Precision opticians work in crafts businesses and industry. They produce optical components and assemblies made of glass and other materials for equipment with optical elements. Their field of activity includes the individual and mass production of optical components and assemblies.

Precision opticians carry out work assignments independently and as part of a team, in accordance with the relevant regulations and safety regulations and on the basis of technical documents.
They obtain information, plan, coordinate and document their work using German and foreign-language technical terms.
They coordinate with superiors and work colleagues as well as other units, taking into account customer requirements. In doing this, they take measures to ensure quality, health and safety at work and environmental protection.
Precision opticians:
- plan and control work processes, monitor, document and evaluate work results
- apply standards and guidelines for ensuring product quality and contribute to the continuous improvement of work processes
- produce flat and round optical components in accordance with technical drawings with a high degree of accuracy to gauge, both manually and using semi-automatic and completely automatic machines
- assemble optical components using various techniques
- clean and finish optical surfaces using various techniques
- assemble and adjust optical and precision mechanical components into assemblies
- measure, test and inspect optical components for optical and geometric requirements
- programme and operate numerically controlled machines
- operate production plant and monitor the production process, ascertain faults, rectify faults or arrange for their rectification
- inspect, store and care for stock on hand
- advise customers in relation to products and services and process complaints
