Makers of metal wind instruments manufacture and repair metal wind instruments, mainly trumpets, trombones, tubas and horns. They plan, execute and monitor their work on a self-reliant basis.

Makers of metal wind instruments are capable of carrying out, unaided, the technical tasks involved in manufacturing a metal wind instrument. They are familiar with the products manufactured in their enterprise and also with those of domestic and foreign competitors. Their work also includes customer service activities.
The main tasks in manufacturing instruments are:
- coordinating and determining the steps in the work sequence and safeguarding the work process;
- assessing and sourcing the materials required;
- obtaining information on manufacturing and maintenance;
- setting up a workplace at a bench or a machine tool;
- preparing, reading and applying sketches, drawings and parts lists;
- applying the basic principles of standardization;
- reading and applying tables, diagrams, manuals and operating instructions;
- manually crafting and machining metals;
- joining of components, mainly using screw connections but also soft-soldering and brazing;
- manufacturing and assembling of bell, valve, pressure mechanism, crook, slide and water key;
- final assembly;
- surface finishing;
- tuning and adjusting timbre;
- carrying out final checks for musical and optical perfection;
- avoiding environmental pollution;
- quality assurance.
