LINE INSTALLER-REPAIRER

Description: Installs and repairs telephone and telegraph lines, poles, and related equipment, according to diagrams, and using electrician’s handtools: Digs holes, using power auger or shovel, hoists poles upright in holes, using truck-mounted winch, and fills and tamps holes, using cement, earth, and tamping device. Ascends poles or enters tunnels and sewers to cut in feeder lines, attach appliances, such as terminal boxes and repeaters, and repair or replace defective lines and auxiliary equipment. Unreels and strings lines from pole to pole and from pole to building, installs hardware, such as conduits and insulators, and attaches appliances on lines. Pulls lines through ducts by hand or with use of winch.

1. Orientation

a. Apply proper terminology the Installer-Repairer will use on the job.
b. Develop skills in the proper use and storing of tools and equipment.
c. Maintain equipment and material records.
d. Observe experienced Installer-Repairer performing tasks involved in the trade of Installer-Repairer.
2. Develop Skills in Pole tower and/or Antenna Construction
2000
a. Assemble and erect steel towers and antenna,
attach various insulators and conductors.
b. Framing, erection, and guying of wood poles and
installation of hardware, insulators and conductors.
c. Install abutments, anchors, braces, fixtures and guys.
d. Utilize and properly handle heavy equipment used in
construction of components.
e. Determine material requirements and salvage
reusable material.
f. Determine worker requirements.
3. Removal and Replacement

a. Utilize and properly handle heavy equipment and tools for removal and replacement of poles, antennas and towers.
b. Remove and replace damaged poles, antennas, towers, guys and anchors.
4. Construction and Handling of Aerial, House and Underground Cable

a. Install buried and underground cable.
b. Prepare line routing surveys and maps.
c. Determine worker and material needs.
d. Perform temporary construction for emergencies or to avoid interruption of service.
e. Cable placement and hang suspension stands.
5. Troubleshooting

a. Perform pre-operational checks and testing of installed cable.
b. Troubleshoot line faults in field cable and make corrections.
c. Install test stations as required.
6. Perform Preventive Maintenance and Safety Procedures

a. Preventive maintenance performed on tools and equipment on a daily, weekly, monthly and/or quarterly basis.
b. Exercise power safety procedures during construction and installation.
c. Administer first aid on site as required.
