Glass finishers grind sheet glass, finish surfaces, engrave glass, grind hollow glassware, paint glass, create artistic glass designs and produce glass constructions. They operate in workshops, on and in buildings and on other objects.
Occupational Skills
Glass finishers plan and coordinate their duties independently and as part of a team, and base their work on technical documents, designs and job orders in a customer-oriented manner. In doing so, they make use of information and communications systems and implement measures to promote occupational safety and health and environmental protection. They check and evaluate their work, document it and carry out quality assurance measures.
Glass finishers:
- process and modify glass, glass products and glass-type materials by sawing, drilling, grinding and polishing them,
- finish glass and glass products using chemical and mechanical techniques,
- make drawings and designs,
- design ornaments and decorative pieces, as well as lettering and monograms,
- produce complex glass objects,
- take admeasures and produce working documents,
- handle tools, instruments and machines.
Glass finishers specialising in edge and surface finishing:
- process sheet glass in particular, using various grinding and polishing techniques on surfaces and edges,
- alter the edges and surfaces of work pieces,
- create sandblasted matt surfaces and engravings with different depths, colour tones and structures,
- apply surface coatings, particularly silver coatings,
- melt and form glass and glass-type materials,
- connect processed work pieces to produce two- and three-dimensional glass objects and glass constructions,
- install and remove glass objects and glass products,
- maintain glass objects and glass products.
Glass finishers specialising in grinding and engraving:
- process and modify mainly hollow glassware,
- alter the shape of work pieces,
- produce different decorative pieces using various grinding techniques,
- engrave abstract, floral and figurative designs,
- produce coats-of-arms and lettering on work pieces using various techniques.
Glass finishers specialising in stained glass work and artistic glass design:
- produce artistic glass designs,
- complete stained glass work using various techniques,
- melt and form glass and glass-type materials,
- create bonded glass joints,
- install and remove glass objects and glass products,
- maintain glass objects and glass products,
- protect and restore glass objects.
