Field of Activity
Because of their broad-based training florists are competent in handling plants – e.g. classifying and caring for plants and parts of plants – and, in particular, in designing decorative plant and cut flower arrangements while taking due account of protection considerations concerning the environment and species diversity. An important part of florists’ work is advising customers on floral and plant matters and carrying out commercial duties. Florists are mainly employed in specialized retail outlets, though an increasing number now work on a freelance basis.
Occupational Skills
- Florists identify and care for plants and cut flowers;
- advise and serve customers;
- plan and arrange plant and cut-flower decorations to conform with customers’ wishes, mainly in the form of bouquets, fixed arrangements, wreaths, garlands and plantings and as funeral, wedding, table and room decorations;
- procure and store goods and monitor stocks;
- understand the principles of commercial costing and commercial accounting.
Particular requirements
Florists have the knowledge required for selling plant protection agents in retail outlets in accordance with the corresponding regulation on competence to sell such agents.
