Summary
Perform crash rescue, fire fighting, crash removal and damage control duties in connection with launching and recovery of aircraft. Operate, service, inspect, and test aircraft firefighting and rescue vehicles, firefighting systems, controls, and rescue equipment. Instruct personnel in the techniques and procedures of fighting fires and operating heavy equipment to hoist and salvage aircraft.
Skills
General
Demonstrate the knowledge of fire behavior, including chemistry of fire, flame spread, flash over, phases of burning, classes of fire, and heat transfer. Demonstrate use of mobile, portable, and fixed fire fighting systems as they relate to classes of fire. Demonstrate the knowledge of aircraft systems, oxygen systems, canopy jettison systems, seat ejection systems, and emergency cut-in areas.
Specialized Fire and Rescue Apparatus
Operate specialized aircraft fire fighting apparatus. Operate specialized aircraft rescue apparatus. Operate independent self-contained extinguishment unit on a fire-fighting vehicle.
Forcible Entry Tools
Operate forcible entry tools, including special and conventional tools, portable electric generator, hydraulic tools (manual and mechanical), air chisel, and saws.
Familiarization of Airport/Airfield and Surrounding Areas
Demonstrate the knowledge of airport/airfield operations including airport/airfield familiarization, runway numbering system, grid maps, familiarization of areas, aircraft arresting barriers, airport/airfield fire fighter training.
Maintenance
Perform maintenance as authorized on equipment, including fire-fighting apparatus, forcible entry equipment, portable emergency cutting equipment, portable fire extinguishers, and life support devices.
Planning and Communications
Demonstrate the knowledge of planning requirements for a pre-incident, including pre-fire plan factors, notification of emergency forces, types of incidents, type of aircraft involved, accident site, access to accident site, available vehicles and equipment, communications, support agencies, mutual aid, reporting an aircraft incident, news media photography at the scene, and joint training exercises.
Aircraft Fire and Rescue Communications
Demonstrate the knowledge of the communications required for airport/airfield operations including direct communication, emergency signals communication between units, telephone/direct line radios and radio procedures, standard terminology used for airport/airfield operations. Perform standard hand signals used in crash fire fighting.
Aircraft Fire and Rescue Procedures
Demonstrate fire fighting procedures using fire fighting agents, including foaming agents application of foam, application of dry chemicals, application of carbon dioxide, vaporizing agents, bromochlorodifluoro-methane (Halon 1211 agents), utilizing conventional apparatus. Demonstrate incidents including positioning of fire fighting vehicles for emergencies, types of crashes, wheel, brake, tire fires, types of wheel and brake fires, fire in hydraulic systems, extinguishing or cooling hot wheels, use of dry chemical on wheel fires, magnesium and titanium fires, composite materials.
Fighting Aircraft Fires
Demonstrate the following response requirements and procedures: Size up an approach, positioning apparatus, control, initial attack, establishment of rescue or escape areas, rescue, gaining access into aircraft, releasing of personnel, removing personnel, extinguishment, overhaul.
First Aid
Demonstrate conducting first aid practices for life threatening injuries on a victim. Demonstrate conducting first aid practices for other than life threatening injuries on a victim. Demonstrate conducting immediate first aid and setting up a triage area for a mass casualty at the airport/airfield attached.
Inspection
Perform fire prevention and protection inspection of areas on the airport/airfield. Check for presence of fire plans, pre-mishap plans concerning actions to be taken upon notification or incident of aircraft on the airport/airfield.

Inventory tools, equipment, and materials used for aircraft fire fighting.
