Summary
Control and extinguish fires, protect life and property and conduct rescue efforts. Demonstrate knowledge and skills for qualifying as Journeyman. Applicable Job Qualification Requirements will be used as a guide in performing tasks and demonstrating knowledge in the following areas. Actual work time must be recorded in the Work Experience Log.
Skills
General
Demonstrate knowledge of fire behavior including chemistry of fire, flame spread, flash over, phases of burning, classes of fire, and heat transfer. Demonstrate use of portable and fixed fire extinguishers as they relate to classes of fire. Demonstrate knowledge of shipboard firemain distribution systems.
Fire Streams
Demonstrate how to properly open and close a nozzle. Manipulate a nozzle to attack all classes of fires. Demonstrate use of special nozzles. Produce a foam stream from foam making appliances.
Operate Portable Equipment
Operate portable pumps and eductors, fire mains, portable emergency cutting equipment, forcible entry tools, portable fire extinguishers, and life support devices.
Perform Maintenance
Perform maintenance on portable pumps, eductors, portable emergency cutting equipment, forcible entry tools, portable fire extinguishers, and life support devices.
Operate De-Smoking and De-Watering Devices
Operate de-smoking devices, vent fans, de-watering devices, pumps, and use different types of protective clothing.
Inspect and Refill Portable Fire Extinguishers
Operate Detection Devices for Chemical Agents
Operate Air Test Equipment
Perform Post-Fire Atmosphere Tests
Inventory Tools, Equipment and Material
Inspection
Perform fire prevention and protection inspections of shipboard spaces and storage areas. Check for presence of fire plans concerning evacuation and actions to be taken upon discovery of fires. Conduct fire drills.
First Aid
Demonstrate conducting first aid practices for life threatening injuries on a victim. Demonstrate conducting first aid practices for other than life threatening injuries on a victim.
