Their work focuses on various fields and types of assignment depending on their area of work and corporate requirements, e.g. design or development functions in industry and the craft sector.

Engineering draftsmen / draftswomen are predominantly involved in detail work, supplementing and perfecting the parameters given by designers to produce the final, complete drawing. They carry out tasks both manually and computer-aided, and ensure that the data they generate are secure and can be further processed. They are responsible for the completeness and clarity of their engineering drawings and documents and also for ensuring that these are drawn up in compliance with standards, intended function and intended mode of manufacture. They must take due account in their work of economic and environmental considerations and also help ensure proper communicatjon with the corresponding corporate divisions.
