Summary
Assess injuries, administer emergency medical care, and extricate trapped individuals. Transport injured or sick persons to medical facilities. Administers first-aid treatment and life support. Assesses nature and extent of illness or injury. Observes, records, and reports patient’s condition. Operates emergency response vehicles. Maintains vehicles and medical and communication equipment, and replenishes first-aid equipment and supplies. NOTE: Completion of the NURSE ASSISTANT, PARAMEDIC, EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN, and/or MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN apprenticeship programs does NOT license nor does it guarantee that the apprentice will be entitled to challenge or be allowed to take the state licensing/certification exams. Each state is sovereign and controls their own licensing procedure. Completion of this program documents that an individual has specific work experience in particular skill areas and has completed an apprenticeship program for that trade.
Skills
First Aid
Perform or operate under qualified supervision items such as; breathing apparatus, protective clothing, safety, tools and appliances, handling hose, directing fire streams, handling and climbing of ladders, forcible entry, standard operating procedures of ladder companies, fire prevention inspection, search and rescue procedures, emergency care, ventilation, live-fire experience. Administer prescribed first aid treatment at site of emergency, or in specialty equipped vehicle, performing such activities as; application of splints, administration of oxygen or intravenous injections, treatment of minor wounds or abrasions, or administration of artificial resuscitation. Administer medical aid to personnel aboard submarines, surface ships, or at isolated areas in absence of or under supervision of medical superior. Treat cuts and burns, perform minor surgery and administer emergency medical care to patients during emergency situations in absence of superior.
Vehicle Emergencies
Perform company standard operating procedures in the areas of; ventilation, salvage, search and rescue emergency care, forcible entry, watch duty, response rules, equipment and apparatus, drive and operate. Assist removal of victims from vehicle and transfer of victim to treatment center.
Fire Engine Assistance
Perform company standard operating procedures in the areas of; exposure, protection, extinguishment emergency care, watch duty, response rules, hose, tools, and appliance, pumping, driving and operating vehicle.
Medical Emergency Response Vehicle
Perform company standard operating procedures search and rescue, extrication, pre-hospital emergency care, extrication equipment, E.M.S. equipment, response rules on procedures, safety, triage, disaster plans and procedures, driving and operating vehicle. Administer first-aid treatment to and transports sick or injured persons to medical facility, working as member of emergency medical team. Respond to instructions from emergency medical dispatcher and drive specially equipped emergency vehicle to specified location. Monitor communication equipment to maintain contact with dispatcher. Communicate with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facility to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and to arrange for reception of victims at treatment facility. Maintain vehicle and medical and communication equipment and replenishes first-aid equipment and supplies.
Building and Shipboard Assistance
Remove or assist in removal of victims from scene of accident or catastrophe. Determine nature and extent of illness or injury, or magnitude of catastrophe, to establish first aid procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance, basing decisions on statements of persons involved, examination of victim.
Administration
Assist treatment center admitting personnel to obtain and record information related to victim’s vital statistics and circumstances of emergency. Examine patients and diagnose condition. Record, transcribe, and file medical case histories. Prepare requisitions for supplies, services, and equipment.
Crowd Discipline
Assist in controlling crowds, protecting valuables, or performing other duties at scene of catastrophe.
Prescribe Medication
Prescribe medication to treat condition of patient.
Inoculations
Inoculate and vaccinate patients to immunize patients from communicable diseases.
Food and Facility Inspection
Inspect food and facilities to determine conformance to sanitary regulations. Recommend necessary measures to ensure sanitary conditions are maintained.
