Custom tailors produce individual made-to-measure pieces of clothing according to their own or existing designs and following customers’ specifications. High-quality processing of the manifold materials is of foremost importance, with due considera-tion of fashion trends and of an overall impression that suits the customer in terms of type and style. The field of activity also includes modernizing and altering pieces of clothing. Custom tailors mainly work in workshops and studios of the custom tailoring and alterations trade, but also in industrial firms and fashion companies as well as in the costume departments of theatres, film and TV productions.
Custom tailors have a command of all activities involved in making pieces of clothing. They are able to carry out these varied activities independently. The custom-made pieces of clothing are characterized by high-quality processing, ideal fit and individual styling.
Occupational Skills
Custom tailors:
- make garments in various designs and applying different techniques of processing,
- develop and design drafts following fashion, functional, historical and technological considerations, also utilizing computer-based programmes,
- realize the interrelations between design, body shape, cut and processing,
- make cut patterns, cut out pieces using the patterns and understand the fundamentals of pattern design,
- plan production steps for making pieces of clothing, decide on processing techniques and document them,
- select materials and accessories on the basis of properties, intended use and customers’ specifications,
- operate tools, machinery and additional equipment,
- carry out stitch and seam types, iron and pin,
- carry out partial work such as pockets, edges, slits, sleeves, collars,
- prepare pieces of clothing for try-on,
- modernize, alter and repair pieces of clothing,
- carry out quality assurance measures,
- observe the principles of industrial safety, health and environmental protection.
