Summary
Constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures. Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated. Selects specified type of lumber or other materials and prepares layout. May specialize in particular phase of carpentry or construction. Demonstrate knowledge and skills for qualifying as Journeyman. Applicable Job Qualification Requirements will be used as a guide in performing tasks and demonstrating knowledge in the following areas. Actual work time must be recorded in the Work Experience Log.
Skills
Foundations, Walls and Floors
Care and use of job related tools, materials and equipment. Lay out and level forms. Build and place straight and irregular concrete forms. Line up and brace concrete walls and columns. Lay out building lines. Lay out footings; build form for concrete floors. Build forms for concrete stairways.
Framing (Foundations and Walls)
Lay out and frame sills and girders. Frame and set floor joists. Lay out and build walls and partitions. Build scaffolding. Install sheathing and plaster grounds.
Exterior Work and Millwork
Care and use of job related tools; skill saw, electric drill, sander, bench saw and pneumatic tools. Apply building paper. Lay out, construct and set louvers. Apply outside wall coverings. Lay out, cut and install exterior trim.
Roofs
Frame and set common, valley, hip and jack rafters. Apply sheathing, asphalt shingles and other types of roof coverings.
Interior Wall Coverings
Apply insulation. Apply wood coverings. Apply composition sheet rock or fiber board. Install baseboards.
Floors
Lay sub floors. Lay hardwood floors.
Stairs
Lay out and cut common type stringers for various types of stairways. Lay out and cut treads. Install railings.
Interior Finish
Cut and fit base. Cut and fit moldings. Set and plumb door jams. Fit and hang windows and doors. Fit and fasten hardware.
Miscellaneous
Build walkways. Erect scaffoldings. Build temporary sheds. Make miscellaneous repairs and additions. Erect miscellaneous types of concrete forms.
