Field of Activity
Apparel tailors are skilled workers capable of producing, unaided, appropriately and to fixed deadlines, design prototypes of garments or other textile goods, mainly for collections or series production. Their field of activity covers organizational duties, decision-making on processing techniques, work steps and work distribution, and testing, optimizing and processing the design prototypes. The initial training is geared to employment in patternshops, pre-production, production, quality assurance, cutting shops and tool-setting and provides a sound basis for subsequent advancement to a middle management post.
Occupational Skills
Apparel tailors manufacture garments and other textile goods on the basis of the knowledge and skills they have accumulated and in compliance with industrial safety, commercial and fashion considerations. They develop technical documentation and job instructions for the pre-production and production stages. They check the product output at the end of each stage and initiate quality assurance measures. As a result of their initial training, apparel tailors are competent in assuming responsibility for their own field of activity and for ensuring cooperation within the enterprise.
The following skills developed during training are applied in their regular work:
- selection of textile materials, other inputs and accessories with reference to intended purpose and economic efficiency;
- development of documentation for the pre-production and production stages and calculation of manufacturing costs;
- setting up, operation and monitoring of plant and machinery and application of various manufacturing technologies in the cutting, pressing, sewing and quality control stages of production;
- handling systems for the automated capture and evaluation of operating data and electronically controlled devices in plant and machinery;
- understanding of the correlations between design, manufacture and processing; processing of design prototypes and production of patterns;
- production of designs for fashion collections and series production taking due account of fashion trends and commercial considerations;
- monitoring of the production process and carrying out the final inspection.
