- Community colleges have long been key players in apprenticeship program development and success. As colleges face uncertainty due to the current health and economic crisis, it can be helpful to utilize lessons from the Great Recession to plan for future program needs. NGA will lead a conversation with AAI grantees discussing the role of community colleges in the last recession, highlighting enrollment trends and ways apprenticeship programs can best serve participants and businesses. - S. Department of Labor Announces Funding Availability for State Apprenticeship Expansion Grants (U.S. DOL): The U.S. DOL announced the availability of $73 million in state apprenticeship expansion grants aimed at expanding apprenticeship throughout the country. States must submit all required documents here by May 21, 2020.
- NGA Webinar: Virtual Upskilling Opportunities in Cybersecurity: May 13 at 1pm EDT
- The NGA Resource Center for State Cybersecurity is hosting its next webinar on Virtual Upskilling Opportunities in Cybersecurity from 1:00 – 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 13, 2020. As COVID-19 continues to impact the economy, individuals – especially those unemployed, furloughed, or looking for new career opportunities – may benefit from virtual upskilling programs, including those in cybersecurity. Please join us to hear from CompTIA on their recent initiative offering virtual, live training courses and from Purdue University on the upcoming national rollout of their registered apprenticeship program in cybersecurity. - Purdue Cyber Apprenticeship Program Launches Student Registration Portal (Purdue University News): The Purdue Cyber Apprenticeship Program announced the launch of its registration portal for prospective candidates seeking an online education and on-the-job cybersecurity training.
- $1.2 Million Awarded from Registered Apprenticeship Fund (Oskaloosa Herald): The Iowa Economic Development Authority announced $1.2 million in new funding awarded to employers and high schools statewide to expand registered apprenticeship programs.
- Electrical Apprentices Finding Fewer On-the-Job Training Opportunities (Owatonna Peoples Press): This spring, Andy Toft, training director for the regional electrical apprenticeship program, is trying to find work for 39 laid-off apprentices – over one-fifth of the program’s total enrollment.
