- AAI Grantees are invited to hear from employers about how they are adapting to the COVID-19 workplace and how apprenticeship can support economic recovery. Speakers Roger Collins of Siemens Energy and Laura Beeth of Fairview Health Services will describe their current needs and challenges, the role of apprenticeship in the current economy, and how they are engaging with apprenticeship programs and building internal pathways for apprentice success. - Iowa High School Apprenticeships: Creating Pathways to Promising Careers (Urban Institute): This case study, published by the Urban Institute, looks at the Iowa Registered Youth Apprenticeship program and how they have been growing their YA program, particularly in traditional trades and child care development. The Governor’s Future Ready Iowa Initiative has propelled this growth and helped to ensure Governor Reynolds support creating successfully career pathways from apprenticeships.
- S. Department of Labor (DOL) Funding Opportunity:
- Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations (WANTO): DOL announced $4.1M in grants to community organizations to recruit, mentor, train and retain more women in quality apprenticeships programs, and to help those women pursue successful careers in manufacturing, infrastructure, cybersecurity, healthcare and other industries. This funding opportunity may include both RAPs and IRAPs. An applicant can apply for a grant between $350k-750K for a performance period of 24 months. Applications are due August 3, 2020. - S. Department of Education (DOE) Funding Opportunities:
- Out-of-School Time Career Pathway Program: DOE issued a notice inviting applications from State Educational Agencies (SEAs) to provide students expanded options to participate in career pathways program, outside of regular school hours or as part of an expanded learning program, that lead to a recognized postsecondary credential such as a certification of completion of an apprenticeship in an in-demand industry sector or occupation. These discretionary grants are estimated to award between $375,000-$625,000 per year for five years for a project period of up to 60 months.
- Education Stabilization Fund-Reimagine Workforce Preparation Grants Program: DOE announced a new student-centered grant competition to spur short-term education opportunities, entrepreneurship and economic growth as America begins to recover from COVID-19-related disruptions to education and our economy. $127.5 million from the CARES act has been allocated to this grant. Applications are due no later than Aug. 24, 2020, and DOE intends to make awards no later than Oct. 2020. Additional information on the grant opportunity can be found here.
- S. Department of Labor (DOL) Comment Request: DOL is soliciting comments concerning a proposed authority to conduct the information collection request (ICR) titled, ‘‘IRAP Program and Performance Reports for Standards Recognition Entities.” Comments are invited by July 27, 2020, and must be submitted electronically through the Federal eRulemaking Portal at http://www.regulations.gov by selecting Docket ID ETA-2020-0003. As a reminder, AAI grantees cannot use AAI grant funds towards IRAPS or IRAP development.

- Pre-Apprenticeship Offered for Jeff State, Lawson State Students (The Clanton Advertiser): Recent high school graduate will now have the opportunity to take the next step toward a future career as pre-apprenticeship program are being offered for manufacturing careers through Central Six AlabamaWorks!
- AWT Apprenticeship Program Being Formed (News Herald): The Alliance for Working Together Foundation has announced the beginning of the AWT Apprenticeship Program. This program is a collaborative effort of the AWT Foundation, Lakeland Community College, Mentor Public Schools, Lake Shore Compact, and Auburn Career Center aimed at strengthening the manufacturing workforce through apprenticeship training.
- Horse Industry Apprenticeship Hopes to Fill Workforce Void (com) A new horse industry apprenticeship, described as an “earn and learn” training for those interested in working in the horse industry, hopes to fill a workforce void.
- College Expands Construction and Plumbing Apprenticeships to Middle, Upper Keys (Keys Weekly): The College of the Florida Keys will expand its apprenticeships in construction technologies, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and HVAC. These expansions are possible through a grant that CFK was awarded through the FL Dept of Economic Opportunity.
- New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions Expands Apprenticeship Career Pathways Across State (Los Alamos Daily Post): As one of Gov. Grisham’s initiatives, the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions is working to expand apprenticeship opportunities across the state, diversify apprenticeship programs beyond traditional fields, and increase the rate at which apprentices complete their program.
- Apprenticeships at Center of Massachusetts Bank Diversity Push (American Banker): A Massachusetts community bank is using the apprenticeship model to encourage young men and women – particularly those of color – from low-income communities to choose banking careers.
- First Apprenticeship Begins in the Fall Through Nashville State (Main Street Nashville): Nashville State Community College partnered with a number of hotels, restaurants and other hospitality organizations in Middle Tennessee to offer a variety of U.S. DOL registered apprenticeship programs in culinary, pastry and hospitality manager, with specializations in lodging management and restaurant management. The programs will be rolled out strategically, as the industry recovers.
- IA Apprenticeship Program Touted as Career Launching Point (Public News Service): Iowa is one of only a handful of states to push for a statewide apprenticeship program. This expansion has led to 4,500 new apprentices between 2016 and 2019, and those who complete training can earn an average of $9,000 more than their peers as their careers started.
- New DOL Apprenticeship Program Benefits Students, Hospitality Industry (The Traverse City Business News): In partnerships with Northwest Michigan Works!, North Central Michigan College (NCMC) and the American Culinary Federation (ACF), Boyne Resorts has forged a program to give current and future culinary workers a two-year apprenticeship path to build their skills and gain credentials.
- Reeves Signs ‘Learn to Earn’ Apprenticeship Bill into Law (Northside Sun): Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves signed into law a new bill that give the ability of high school students to earn elective credit for apprenticeships.
- ProEquities Launches Financial Advisor Apprenticeship Program (Financial Advisor Mag): ProEquities, an independent RIA and broker-dealer, has launched GEN Next Academy, a proprietary apprenticeship program for new advisors seeking experience.
- Roto-Rooter Finds New Way to Train Apprentices (com): While some trades businesses have frozen apprenticeships during the pandemic, other are pushing through. Roto-Rooter continue to train apprentices with a few adjustments, the largest being that most of the schooling is done online and completed remotely.
- Two Milwaukee Workforce Organizations Join Midwest Coalition to Advance Racial Equity in Manufacturing (Milwaukee Independent): Menomonee Valley Partners and WRTP/Big Step joined a new coalition that launched by the Century Foundation, the Urban Manufacturing Alliance, and seven other urban workforce development organizations to develop training programs that forge a more racially inclusive future for manufacturing.
