Apprenticeship Resources:
- S. Department of Labor (DOL) COVID Guidance: COVID guidance for apprenticeship grants and contracts, including for the AAI cohort, is now published on DOL’s COVID webpage. Topics include:
- How can grantees encourage their Registered Apprenticeship program to keep apprentices employed during the COVID-19 crisis?
- For AAI grantees, what are the expectations for employer outreach and activities, which normally require meeting with people?
- Can AAI grantees modify the budget and activities to build new capacity that is more resilient to emergencies like COVID-19?
Happy 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act #ADA30! Relevant Events and Resources:
- The Office of Disability Employment Policy published its ADA30 website, as well as a historical timeline, which includes details about the U.S. Department of Labor’s ADA30 events and activities, the ADA’s employment provisions, the history of disability employment in America (since the ADA’s signing in 1990), and examples of how organizations can celebrate the ADA.
- NGA published an Op-Ed titled “States advance inclusive measures to support Americans with disabilities,” that outlines how states have pushed for continued and additional support for people with disabilities when it comes to short- and long-term recovery efforts.
- The National Conference of State Legislatures is hosting an ADA30 Summit Series, which is a weeklong series to commemorate the ADA’s 30th anniversary. The series runs July 20-July 24 and there is an online session that will be held at 1:00 p.m. ET each day covering various disability-related topics, including the future of the workplace, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, accessible transportation, and accessible legislatures. U.S. DOL Secretary Eugene Scalia will kick off the series with opening remarks today. The series is free and open to all. Register for the full series.
- The Council of State Governments is also hosting a series of ADA30 webinars. The first event, “The Legacy of the ADA: Celebrating 30 Years of Increasing Access and Opportunity,” will take place on Thursday, July 30 at 12:00pm ET. Register here for the webinar.
- Women in Government recently hosted a virtual panel titled, “ADA 30th Anniversary – State Exchange on Employment & Disability,” as part of the WIG Summer Summit Series. The panel featured Deputy Assistant Secretary Jennifer Sheehy, Tennessee State Senator Becky Duncan Massey, Disability:IN President and CEO Jill Houghton, and National Association of State Budget Officers Executive Director Shelby Kerns, and was moderated by Alaska State Representative Geran Tarr. Panelists highlighted the impact of the ADA over the past 30 years and discussed ways in which state policymakers can work with the disability community and businesses to further inclusive employment efforts. - Fed Funds to Expand Maine’s Apprenticeship Program (Maine Biz): A $450,000 injection to a Maine Dept. of Labor program is expected to broaden the apprenticeships available in the state to include health care, mental health care, addiction treatment, and alternative pain management occupations.
- New National Apprenticeship Program in Partnership with FASTPORT (Supply & Demand Chain Executive): Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), the voice of the third-party logistics industry, is proud to announce is new National Apprenticeship Program in partnership with FASTPORT.
- Dropbox, Zoom Join Apprenticeship Program for the Formerly Incarcerated (HR Dive): Dropbox and Zoom are set to join an apprenticeship program developed by Slack that brings in formerly incarcerated individuals into highly skilled engineering roles.
- MSJC Apprenticeship Program Launches in Fall (Valley News): In Fall 2020, Mt. San Jacinto College’s Career Education will launch an apprenticeship program for the automotive industry in the Mt. San Jacinto Community College District boundaries.
- NSWC Crane Partners with Purdue University to Offer Cybersecurity Apprenticeships (Purdue Newsroom): Purdue University’s Cyber Apprenticeship Program (P-CAP) has launched at Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (NSWC Crane) to advance cybersecurity capabilities.
- Wayne Farms and Alabama Community College System Launch First Apprenticeship Program (WTVY): Wayne Farms and the Alabama Community College System have developed the state’s first accredited workforce development apprenticeship program, which was developed to focus on hard-to-fill mechanical, electrical, and technical positions.
