- USDOL Announces $145 Million in H-1B Grants: On January 19, the USDOL announcedthe award of $145 million in the H-1B One Workforce Grant Program to invest in training for key sectors of the U.S. economy. Grant recipients will focus on upskilling the current workforce and training the workforce of the future for critical industries such as IT, advanced manufacturing, and transportation.
- Apprenticeship Offers a Path to Recovery Through Tumultuous Times: A Q&A with Eric Seleznow (AAI Grantee JFF): As the nation grapples with the impact of millions of workers losing their jobs due to COVID-19, the value and promise of apprenticeship is more important today than ever. In a recent interview, Eric Seleznow, senior advisor and head of JFF’s Center for Apprenticeship & Work-Based Learning, shared his thoughts on the current state of apprenticeship and its role in achieving an equitable economic recovery.
- Apprenticeship by State: COVID-19 Special Episode 1 (JFF): In this special episode of Apprenticeship by State, host Joseph Hollins speaks with seven apprenticeship directors across the country about the COVID-19 pandemic, its implications on apprenticeship systems across the United States, and how these states have pivoted to respond to the moment.
- Partnership to Advance Youth Apprenticeship Newsletter (New America): You can sign up here to receive updates on youth apprenticeship resources, publications, and events to better connect individuals seeking to expand or develop youth apprenticeship programs in their communities.
- Using CareerOneStop to Provide Virtual Job Search Services to Help New College Graduates (Workforce GPS): On Thursday, February 4 at 12-1:30 PM EST, staff from CareerOneStop will present how to use CareerOneStop to provide virtual services to help new college graduates job search. - Registration Now for the 2021 HIRE Vets Medallion Award Program (USDOL): Employers interested in applying for the 2021 program may now create or update existing accounts in preparation of the program’s launch on January 31, 2021. The HIRE Vets Medallion Award Program is the only federal award program that recognizes employers who recruit, retain, and employ veterans. COVID-19 and Recovery Resources:
- Department of Labor (DOL) COVID Guidance: COVID guidance for apprenticeship grants and contracts, including for the AAI cohort, is now published on DOL’s COVID webpage.
- NGA Education’s State Reopening Tracking: This chart provides an overview of key guidance that was issued by states and governors between March and December 2020 and indicates actions that states took to reopen educational settings. These settings includes child care settings, camps and summer school programming, athletics, K-12 schools, and postsecondary institutions.
- NGA State Roadmap for Workforce Recovery: To help Governors and states align short-term activities with longer-term economic and workforce recovery goals, NGA has compiled the experience, insights and innovations from more than 100 state and industry leaders from 32 states that participated in a series of workshops into a State Roadmap for Workforce Recovery.
Equity Resources:
- Race and Registered Apprenticeship: RA’s Role in Driving Equity (JFF): As a training program that leads to high-quality and high-paying jobs, Registered Apprenticeship has the potential to serve as a solution to achieving greater equity. To reach that potential, apprenticeship leaders and providers must confront the structural racism that persists throughout the U.S. workforce, including the Registered Apprenticeship system. Join current and former state apprenticeship directors in this upcoming discussion to learn how they are expanding racial and economic equity in Registered Apprenticeship.

- Maui to Receive $300,000 Federal Grant to Create STEM Apprenticeship Program (com): The Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB) announced they would be receiving $300,000 in federal funding from the STEM Talent Challenge, a new grant program administered by the Economic Development Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce, to offer unique on-the job training in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills.
- Solar Apprenticeship Training Program Launches (Vermont Biz): Adult Continuing Education at Burlington Technical College (ACE-BTC) has launched a new program to help individuals without pervious experience find jobs in the solar industry with their new Solar Installation Apprenticeship Program.
- Apprenticeships Aren’t Just for the Trades. It’s Also a Way to Bolster Colorado’s Early Childhood Workforce (CPR News): Red Rocks Community College’s Childcare Development Specialist Apprenticeships is a two-year program, the only federally registered apprenticeship for early childhood education in Colorado.
- NTC Announces Medical Assistant Apprenticeship (Wausau Pilot and Review): Northcentral Technical College (NTC) has announced a Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program, which gives learners the opportunity to earn a college degree while completing a State of Wisconsin Registered Apprenticeship.
- Startup Founded by Former UK PM Tony Blair’s Son Nabs $44M for Apprenticeship Startup (crunchbase.com): Multiverse, which was previously known as WhiteHat, matches talent who have not graduated from college with apprenticeship opportunities at companies like Facebook, Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, KPMG, etc. With the new funding, the company will be expanding into the U.S.
- OhioMeansJobs: Apprenticeship Program Helps Employers (Urbana Citizen): Ohio’s Registered Apprenticeship Program helps employers overcome many challenges, such as a limited pool of qualified candidates, and build their skilled workforce from within.
- Manufacturers Coalition Gets OK for Apprenticeship Program (com): The Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition has gotten approval for its machinist apprenticeship program for inclusion in TechCred, the State of Ohio’s workforce development and training initiative.
- SD Labor Department Providing Apprenticeship Investment Funds (com): The Department of Labor and Regulation will be providing $270,000 in investment funding to help businesses and organizations train new apprentices in Registered Apprenticeship Program in South Dakota. Businesses may be eligible to receive $500 for each new apprentice who is an existing employee and/or $1,000 for each new apprentice who is a new employee.
