Apprenticeship Resources:
- Request for Information on Expanding WBL Opportunities for Youth: The Department of Education has published a Request for Information (RFI) on Expanding Work-Based Learning Opportunities for Youth. The Department will use submitted information to inform its implementation of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006, as amended by the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V). Responses are due by January 13, 2021. The full text, data tables, definitions, description of measures, and instructions for the information submission may be found in the December 2, 2020 Federal Register.
- Desegregating Work and Learning Through ‘Earn and Learn’ Models: This report from Brookings explores how desegregating work and learning through earn-and-learn strategies—as other industrialized countries have done—would provide multiple paths to jobs and careers for people with diverse backgrounds and experiences, unleashing the full potential of our homegrown talent.
- Department of Labor (DOL) COVID Guidance: COVID guidance for apprenticeship grants and contracts, including for the AAI cohort, is now published on DOL’s COVID webpage.
Apprenticeship in the News
- House Approves Apprenticeship Overhaul (org): The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation reauthorizing the National Apprenticeship Act (NAA), which would invest billions of dollars in the work-based learning mode, codify standards, and expand apprenticeship to new communities and industries.
- Young Farmer Apprenticeship Program Signed Into Law (The Evening Tribune): The Young Farmer Apprenticeship Program was recently signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
- Baltimore is Teaming Up with Guinness to Launch New Diversity Beer Apprenticeship Program (Black Enterprise): The city of Baltimore is teaming up with Irish brewer Guinness to create a new program to bring more diversity to beer industry, with its new Diversity Apprenticeship Program, in partnership with the Guinness Open Gate Brewery.
- Mazda Toyota Manufacturing Starts University Apprenticeship Program (Plant Services): Drake State and Mazda Toyota Manufacturing developed the apprenticeship program to support workforce needs at the automotive production plant.
- M&T and IBM Partner on High Tech Apprenticeship Program (Spectrum Local News): In a new partnership with M&T, IBM has launched its first apprenticeship accelerator program, which is focused on finding people who have not traditionally had opportunities for good paying technology jobs.
- Local Workforce Board Develops Adult Apprenticeship Program to Equip Job Seekers with New Skills (com): GuilfordWorks – a local workforce development board in NC – has developed an adult-focused apprenticeship initiative, in collaboration with local businesses, education partners, and state agencies.
- HCC Launches Local Kentucky Apprenticeship Program (WKDZRadio): Hopkinsville Community College has partnered with two local companies to pilot a new apprenticeship program, Kentucky Apprenticeship, powered by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS).
- FIU, First Four-Year Research University in the State of Florida to Offer Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program (fiu.edu): The Florida Department of Education has approved Florida International University’s Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program (Cyber-CAP), which combines technical skills, industry credentials, an on-the-job training to prepare learners to work in cybersecurity.
